As an adoptee, I have often railed against the folly of identifying yourself too strongly with your “heritage.” I contend that you talk with your hands not because you are Italian, but because you are a spaz. You have never even met anyone who’s been to Ireland; don’t blame an entire nation alien to you for your drinking problem. And so on.

This was brought to mind by something I just read. It’s dangerous to identify too strongly with your race becausesometimes you find out you’re not actually black.
