Locally, 104.1 is like the Bermuda Triangle of radio formats. New stations cheerily venture onto the airwaves never to be heard from again. Kix country! Alice: the Lilith Fair Station! Extreme: the Ozzfest Station! (There was a whiplash-inducing transition if ever there was one.) The Eighties Station! The Christmas Music Station! You never tune in the same 104 twice.
But 104 has been quite a listening experience in 2004. Since the Christmas music went away (nothing is built to last on a foundation of snow), they have been “spinning the wheel of music,” mocking their own instability by literally switching formats every three songs. This is a stopgap measure until… well, until today, now that I think about it, when their new format will be unveiled.
Am I the only one who wishes they’d just do the wheel of music thing forever? I love it. Box of Chocolates Radio. Every time I turn it on, it’s like I found somebody’s iPod lying on the sidewalk.
People our age and younger don’t really listen to A Type Of Music anymore, do they? I mean, my boss is in his early forties, and I have heard him quote the Allman Brothers and 50 Cent within the span of an hour. This is something that can be capitalized on, people!
