Except for the parts when they periodically have to say, “You are definitely going to die in a little while,” doctors have a great job. I called my doctor last week (he became my doctor during the call by winning jimski.net’s “Soonest Appointment” contest) and said, “I can’t hear out of my left ear.” They [...]

SIGH.
Just to be clear: this bill is sponsored by Alaska’s Ted Stevens who, when asked to cut some of his pork out of the federal highway budget so the money could go towards hurricane relief for thinking, working, spending, inventing, contributing human beings, got on the floor and declared, “No! NO!! NO!!!” threatened to resign [...]

“Grateful, but… three extra letters! Twice as long! No time!”
And punctuation? What do you think this is, some kind of pleasure cruise?

Anybody ever heard of ‘conductive hearing loss’? It’s the kind of hearing loss that occurs when fluid or something else is creating blockage within your ear. (This is opposed to nerve hearing loss, which is a whole different ballgame.) I’m interested in conductive hearing loss today because 1) I’m experiencing it and 2) there’s nothing in there. [...]

It scares me when mommy and daddy fight:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President George W. Bush has reassured Saudi Arabia’s king that he will continue to cooperate with the kingdom on energy issues even after his pledge to wean America off Middle East oil, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States said on Tuesday.
Bush’s pledge in January [...]

The President Sez:
There’s* a lot of people in the world** who don’t believe that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours*** can be free and self-govern. I reject that. I reject that strongly.**** I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren’t [...]

Your day would be a little bit cooler if there were still stuff like this.
Youtube.com gets a little better every time I go. I was up until 2:00 Saturday night searching the site at random. “‘1977 news’! ‘Atari commercial’!’Big Mac song’!”

Paul McCartney turned sixty-four over the weekend, so that one has been asked and answered.
Just in time for Father’s Day, Time magazine has an essay that seems to have been ripped right out of my addled head, asking the question, “Why exactly do people think parenthood is enjoyable?” Time’s answers include “cognitive dissonance,” “intermittent reinforcement,” [...]

I went to the comic book store on my lunch break and picked up Marvel’s “Civil War” #2, which I’ve been waiting for since before #1 came out. (The first issue is always just set-up, and this book was talked about– and hence set up– so thoroughly in the press before its debut that reading [...]

Almost two weeks ago, a woman accidentally left her Sidekick in a cab, where the next passenger found it. That person did not return the device, choosing instead to keep it and use it, taking pictures and sending messages with the true owner’s account. The phone’s rightful owner and a friend accessed her account, found [...]

I see that the microwave popcorn kept as a failsafe in my desk drawer contains 20 calories per buttery cup. Sounds good, but watch out: the bag also informs us that the popcorn is 90 calories per serving when unpopped. So if you’re counting your calories and were thinking about ripping open a bag and [...]

…that in addition to having a full set of podcasts and RSS feeds, the White House web site also has a Barney Cam? You can get an updated feed as a camera crew follows Barney and makes short films about his merry frolics and adventures. So no worries there. Your tax dollars aren’t going anywhere [...]

-Political candidates, car dealers, and radio advertisers everywhere: sure, remembering to mention your web site is important. But please, no more “visit our web site at ‘double-you double-you double-you dot,’” especially if you’ve already given out the address two or three times. Anybody who’s going to check it out already has a handle on that [...]

They whip the whole community into a chattering froth– “we’re going to close the highway; we’re going to pour concrete until we asphyxiate you in your house”– they get the city and the county and the municipalities to form task forces and draft proposals and breathe into paper bags; they strain the local web sites’ [...]

“We are somehow like an amalgam, a mix of bacteria and human cells. There are some estimates that say 90 percent of the cells on our body are actually bacteria,” Steven Gill, a molecular biologist formerly at TIGR and now at the State University of New York in Buffalo, said in a telephone interview.
“We’re entirely [...]
