- Paul McCartney turned sixty-four over the weekend, so that one has been asked and answered.
- Just in time for Father’s Day, Time magazine has an essay that seems to have been ripped right out of my addled head, asking the question, “Why exactly do people think parenthood is enjoyable?” Time’s answers include “cognitive dissonance,” “intermittent reinforcement,” and a new personal favorite, “When you only get to do one thing all day, it de facto becomes the most enjoyable thing you do.” As a childless person with many babied friends and a loooooooot of things to work out right now, the piece crystallized a number of things that I have been chewing on just as I was beginning to wonder if I was going crazy. Also, when you’re in a certain mood, sometimes it actually feels nice to see a major newsmagazine say, “Kids empirically make people’s lives less happy.” (Thanks again, Mom and Dad!) I’d go into more depth about my own mood, but you know what?: you don’t want to hear about it.
- Jean-Luc Picard’s blog is a brilliant idea in a low-hanging-fruit sort of way.
