The President Sez:

There’s* a lot of people in the world** who don’t believe that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours*** can be free and self-govern. I reject that. I reject that strongly.**** I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren’t necessarily — are a different color than white can self-govern.

*Nice.

**Which people are these? I’ve never heard anyone say this. Did the klan from the ’50s invent time travel and declare war on America?

***
As Americans, what color is our skin, exactly?

****
Take that, fifties klan. I’m confused: normally, when the president whips out this rhetorical method (”a lot of people will tell you we should surrender in Iraq; a lot of people in this country say we should let Saddam out of jail, make him the next American Idol, and let him ride Rumsfeld to shows like a pony”) he is setting up an imaginary socialist so that his worldview can sound reasonable in comparison. In this case, who is he trying to vilify? If he’s right– if, in fact, there is a lot of people who don’t believe Muslims can handle democracy– they’re probably in his base.

For the last two months, whenever my news magazines have arrived in the mail I have immediately tossed them in my backpack and never looked at them again. I am utterly disengaged, and it is amazing how easy it is to be reminded of why that is.

One Response to “that straw man is such a closed-minded bastard”

  1. Kerry Says:

What’s interesting is that even in the White House’s “official,” approved transcripts of the interviews, press conferences, and speeches, they leave in all of his wierd little verbal tics, like interupting himself, all the bad grammar, stammering, starting sentences over in mid-sentence, etc.

“There’s a lot of people in this world who would say that the leader of the free world should have public speaking abilities beyond those of your average sleep-deprived meth addict. And I reject–I should say–I wouldn’t necessarily want to say–I reject–and I mean, listen, what can you say?–hold on, now–And those people don’t–they don’t necessarily…” etc.
